East Midland Zoological Society has been running Twycross
Zoo, an award-winning conservation and science-led zoo, for almost 60 years.
The zoo is rapidly growing, and pre-Covid, was welcoming over 60,000 people
every year to the 100-acre rural site near Atherstone.
Twycross house 500 animals which include the largest
chimpanzee family in the UK and the biggest primate collection in the world. They
are the only zoo in Europe to house all 4 great apes – Gorilla, Orangutan,
Bonobo and Chimpanzee, and care for some of the most endangered and precious
lives to the highest welfare standards, including Sumatran Tigers, Amur
Leopards and Snow Leopards.
In 2014, the zoo launched a 20-year, £55million Masterplan.
Since this time, new habitats which have opened to the public include Giraffe
Savannah, Gibbon Forest and a £3.5 million world-class chimpanzee habitat - Chimpanzee
Eden, with Twycross looking to build on this continued growth and success.
Managing all four species of great ape, take a hands-on
approach to ensuring that animal keeping is carried out to the zoo’s required
standards on a day-to-day basis, and actively support the Team Leader.
Twycross have recently been awards £20m grant funding to
develop the National Science and Conservation Centre (NSCC) onsite. The NSCC
will support vital work around species conservation, bringing together experts
in conservation science and training the next generation of conservationists,
whilst offering researchers from around the world the opportunity to study the
four great apes as well as 100 endangered species.
