Animal Keeper (Category 1)

Johnsons Zoological Gardens is part of Johnsons of Old Hurst located in Huntingdon, a working farm family business established since 1899 with onsite farm shop, tea room and steakhouse. 

The expanding collection within our Zoological Gardens includes a variety of juvenile to 14 foot crocodilians, a range of non-venomous snakes, a small selection of big cats, avians including Macaws, and a collection of smaller mammals and marsupials as well as livestock including cattle, buffalos, ostriches and pigs.

What will this role of Animal Keeper (category 1) entail?

This is a newly created role, and as the Animal Keeper you will utilise your experience with Category 1 animals, superb communication, interpersonal and time management skills, to take responsibility for the following tasks:

  • Feed a variety of mammals and reptiles
  • Clean enclosures
  • Undertake enclosure maintenance
  • Ensure animal enrichment
  • Keep daily records
  • Lead experience days / animal encounters
  • Take care of livestock when required

Although not essential, a Teleporter License to drive the Telescopic Forklift Truck to move feeds and pallets etc would be highly advantageous for the role.

A permanent contract is on offer with flexible working times and the option to choose either full or part time hours. A full-time salary will be in the region of £20,000 with the level dependent on experience and qualifications.
