Seasonal Retail Assistant – until 4th September 2022

Our working environment could not be more different from a typical retail setting – where else could you stroll among rare giraffes and tigers on your lunch break?

What makes Chester Zoo a great place to work?

As the UK’s biggest and best zoo, we have ambitious goals, exciting plans, and there’s always lots going on here. We’re an inclusive and diverse organisation, made up of nearly 500 permanent and 500 seasonal team members.

Each year, we have plenty of exciting seasonal opportunities within our Retail, Operation, Admissions and Food and Beverage teams, to undertake a variety of tasks such as picking stock in our warehouse, stewarding the car parks, working in our gift shops, welcoming guests, or face painting. No two days will be the same!

The Role – Seasonal Retail Assistant

Our Seasonal Retail Assistants work in all areas of retail at the zoo – one specialised area is the role of face painting and “handimals” so we would love to hear from you if you have experience in this area.  You’ll be working in our studio or in one of our pop-up locations, painting faces and designing handprints. You could also be working in one of our gift shops, in our busy warehouse, or fulfilling our online shop orders! Please clearly state your experience relevant to the above areas on your application as we are looking for people with different areas of expertise.

The Package

  • Seasonal contract, working until 4th September 2022
  • Rate of pay of £9.50 per hour regardless of age
  • Working on a rota basis with a minimum of 8 hours per week, although hours will be significantly more during busy periods
  • Annual leave which accrues based on hours of work
  • Staff pass so you can visit the zoo during your time off, plus complimentary tickets for your friends and family
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

Our Requirements – Seasonal Retail Assistant

  • Be passionate about excellent customer service and be a strong communicator
  • Be confident, flexible, and approachable with a “can do” attitude
  • Enjoy exceeding targets and up selling
  • Be comfortable and able to work outside for long periods in all weathers
  • Although not essential, experience gained within a retail or visitor attraction environment would be advantageous

Flexibility in these roles is key, so successful candidates must be able to work up to 5 days out of 7 every week, which will include weekends and bank holidays as rostered.

More About Us

We’re not just an amazing, award-winning visitor attraction that’s home to 20,000 incredible animals inside 128 acres of stunning gardens. We’re not just the UK’s most popular zoo. We’re a major wildlife charity that’s committed to the recovery of endangered species, globally. And, as the world faces an extinction crisis, we’re making a hugely significant contribution to conservation at a time when it’s needed most. We are Chester Zoo and we prevent extinction.
